Frank Fujita died in January 2010. He was a watercolorist and that was the medium that he loved and the medium he understood.
Frank was born in San Francisco in 1928 and spent part of his youth at school in Japan. In addition to following the standard academic programs Frank took courses in floral arrangement, an art form highly regarded in Japanese culture. He also learned the art of Sumi-e and calligraphy under the tutelage of his grandfather Kyoshin who was an accomplished practitioner of these traditional art forms. In Japanese culture these art forms are an integral part of the path to spiritual harmony and are considered to be essential elements of an artist’s instruction to understanding form and composition. Calligraphy is more than just writing. Calligraphy is an expression of mind and spirit in writing – it is purity of form in words.
To master the flow of inks and to be a real calligrapher in the Japanese culture an artist must be able to allow the mind and spirit unite with the agility of the hand; the mind, through the hand guides the levity or strength of the brush; spiritual energy is channeled through the pen.
Learning these disciplines while being surrounded by other Japanese art forms in his youth has had an immense influence on his own art work. Much of Frank’s work reflects the deep attachment that he had maintained for the homeland of his forebears. Many of his favorite subjects are scenes from pastoral Japan. They are expressions of fond childhood memories.
Frank’s watercolors are as finely detailed as the traditional Japanese watercolor (woodblocks). His control of the brush and of the color flow is exceptional for a watercolor artist. There is an almost photographic quality in some of his work such is the exceptional quality of technique.
Frank also had a great love of California landscapes. His use of color and light are reminiscent of the great California ‘plein air’ impressionists, but with an added dimension to the work furnished by the detail.
Frank exhibited his work in solo and group shows throughout the years. He received several awards and prizes in juried watercolor competitions.
